I am not a member of any organized political party. I’m a Democrat.” — Will Rogers
It’s the happiest I’ve been since the Knicks glorious victory, and probably, more memorable (maybe not!).
For me, the people spoke, not the talking heads, the faux experts, the Juan and Maria’s spoke, incredible numbers rejected the Musk zillions, the gerrymanders, the corruption, we are beginning to take back our democracy. It’s only a first step.
Trump is sitting in the White House, (probably) for two more year, sixty votes to cloture, to pass bills in the Senate, 2/3 votes to override presidential vetoes, and, will the Dems work together or mud wrestle for power in the internecine battle for the top of the ticket in 28?
Let’s not ignore the Ds swept across New York State, and as well as at the local level.
Richard Haas, the former editor of Foreign Affairs is on target,
The Democrats came out on top by staying on message and by focusing on affordability. The critical question is what they do now. Can they avoid overreach – not pressing for impeachment, open borders, DEI mandates, court packing, or wealth taxes – and instead develop serious alternative policies on health care, trade, immigration, AI, the debt, campaign finance, and energy and climate? The congressional leadership has its work cut out for it, although it is helped here by the scale of the win, which has the effect of weakening the leverage of the radical left.
The scale of the victory is mind boggling, from Maine to the deep South to Texas and California, from Texas to maybe Alaska.
If the “war” in the Middle East subsides and oil and fertilizer begins to flow, prices at the pump will nosedive, a first step to affordability.
The greedy, who, with cooperation of the Repubs allowed prices to spike to line their pockets, will probably become less greedy.
A near term victory is important, patience is not a quality shared by the populace, “we put you in office, live up to your promises.”
Elections are decided on a single day, governing is frustrating, crisis followed by crisis, “you said you were going to fix things, show me.”
There are Dems who want to see retribution: investigations, impeachments, “you made us suffer, now it’s your turn,” and others concentrating on policy: should Medicare for All be at the top of the list?
Will the Trump cabinet abandon the sinking ship or go down with the ship? Or look to jump on to the winning ship?
As I write I notice the Dow Jones average is up more than three per cent, an incredible jump.
Thanks to all of you, you contributed to candidates, worked phone banks, knocked on doors, you were the foot soldiers who won the battle, the fight is not over, we have a long way to go, stay engaged, November 3rd, 2026 may be a date to celebrate, the day we saved our nation.
