A Socialist Mayor in a Capitalism Driven City: Can They Co-Exist?

The culmination of an election is a coronation, the swearing in with pomp and circumstance and the Mamdani ceremony fit the bill. Thousands of supporters, taking place on the steps of City Hall, a choir from an elementary school with Mandy Patinkin, a poem   written for the occasion, Bernie Sanders administering the oath of office and the Mamdani speech,  his concluding campaign address, “promises must be realized” and the new mayor will not back down.

Upbeat, a recounting of his promises, “freeze the rent,” “fast and free buses,” “free childcare for all,” and not mentioning ending mayoral control. After appointing a chancellor, an experienced superintendent with years of experience, will he restructure the flailing behemoth or allow it to fester, almost as an aside Mamdani said he no longer opposed mayoral control. Watch his press conference here and the author of Class Size Matters, Leonie Haimson, is concerned,

@leoniehaimson

Very troubling. Every mayor has promised more parent input and then when push comes to shove, they just do what they want. Any system with no locally based checks & balances is inherently dysfunctional & anti- democratic

It has also led to poor policy decisions under every mayor since Bloomberg, and too many backroom deals in which kids needs have been sacrificed for political ends.

One man rule has not worked for our federal government as we’ve seen clearly in 2025. No matter how much @ZohranKMamdani has progressive positions or values, it will not work well for @nycschools either

“Freeze the Rent:” The Rent Guidelines Control Board meets in the Spring and the members of the Board were appointed by Adams.

“Fast and Free Buses:” A majority of the MTA board is appointed by the governor and the MTA chairman says the cost of “fast, free buses” 600M is far beyond the fiscal resources of the MTA.

“Free Childcare for All:” Governor Hochul has latched on to free childcare as a campaign issue, although the billions in funding probably requires a new tax and except for property taxes taxing requires a state law, with the entire state government on the November ballot a tax increase is a heavy lift.

E. J. MacMahon, points to the crucial problem: funding, without any new proposals the city faces yawning budget gaps.

Trump ire, a recession, both possible, could drive the city into cutting not expanding city services. A socialist mayor in a city driven by capitalism is a challenge. Wall Street, the engine of capitalism is also the engine of the city
